Why Stay In Shelter?
Domestic Violence is a problem many people will face at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, in lots of these cases the abuse will escalate to a point where individuals are no longer safe in their own homes. Genesis House is a resource for anyone, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation, who is experiencing this type of abuse from an intimate partner. Lorain County Safe Harbor/Genesis House exists to provide temporary safety, shelter, food, aid and support to the victims of domestic violence and their children who have reached the decision to leave the violent situation. Our shelter is a safe, confidential place where people can stay to recuperate from their emotional or physical traumas and plan for their future safety. While shelter residents must make their own plans and decisions, an extensive client advocacy program is available to make sure they have access to the information they need to move forward. Shelter staff is always available to discuss their options.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN SHELTER
Our shelter is a house located in a residential neighborhood. Single residents will stay in their own room or share depending on available space. Residents with children will have their own room. The shared living spaces include a playroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, back yard and bathrooms.
During their stay in shelter, residents will be offered information and guidance on how to overcome their abusive relationships. Residents will also be given information on how to secure housing, employment, and any other resources they might need.
Beyond physical safety, the Genesis House staff is available in the shelter 24 hours a day to provide emotional support to help heal and empower our residents.

Where is the shelter?

For the safety of our residents and staff, the shelter is at an undisclosed location somewhere in Lorain County.
How do you get into shelter?

When a person calls the hotline, a trained shelter staff person answers. During the hotline call, the caller can discuss what options are available and talk through ways they can stay safe. If the caller chooses, an intake for shelter can be done at that time. We will inform the potential resident how to find us at that time.
Who can stay in the shelter?

Anyone over the age of 18 who is fleeing an abusive intimate relationship. Parents may bring their minor children with them.
What does it cost to stay?

Staying at the shelter is completely free.
How long can I stay?

Each resident’s situation is different. There is no set amount of time to stay with us.
What do I do with my pets?

While you stay in shelter, we will link you to programs that will keep your pet safe.
Is the shelter only for women?

No, Genesis House will serve anyone regardless of their gender identity.
